Part of my senior year AP art and design portfolio. I decided to use colored pencil because I wanted to create a bright and colorful piece after working with only one color in past portraits. However, I also knew that I couldn’t just color the portrait whatever color I wanted; it needed to work in grayscale so the rest of the portrait could work. So, when putting my color palette together, I worked keeping grayscale in mind. My brighter colors, like yellow, would act as my lighter grays, and my darker colors, like purple, would act as my darker grays. This resulted in a colorful portrait that also works in grayscale. I started this piece by going out into the world and creating rubbings of different textures I encountered using charcoal. After that, I looked in magazines for more textures in black and white. Once I had gathered all my materials, I assembled my piece using matte medium. When I assembled this piece, I drew inspiration from woven patterns and created my own version. With this print, my goal was to create an image of a whale using as few outlines as possible. I did this by using my carving tools to carve small lines and vary their density, giving the effect of highlights and shadows. Creating the image of that whale with minimal outlines. My inspiration for this piece began with a desire to draw wings and then expanded to include these different birds of meaning. I wanted this piece to be both striking in its color and composition, but also in its meaning. Through learning about the different meanings these birds carry and bringing them together in a single picture, I hoped to convey the importance of birds. We see so many birds every day, and because of that, it becomes very easy to look over them and to forget the messages they carry.
